Two professors welcomed into BCoE Academy

STARKVILLE, Miss. — The Bagley College of Engineering inducted two new members into the Academy of Distinguished Teachers.
Islam El-adaway, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering, and Andrew Walters, an instructor of aerospace engineering, were announced as the newest members during a May ceremony at Old Waverly in West Point, Mississippi.
The inductees were selected based on nomination letters written by students and colleagues. These letters highlighted each professor’s dedication to his field of study as well as his passion for students.
El-adaway’s educational interests examine how active problem-based and service-based teaching can be used to promote high-order learning. His research and educational activities have resulted in the publication of several peer-reviewed journal papers with his graduate and undergraduate students for the American Society of Civil Engineers, Canadian Society of Civil Engineers and American Society of Engineering Education.
Andrew Walters
The Richard A. Rula professor in construction engineering and management, El-adaway has been selected for the 2012 David Carlisle Hull Faculty Leadership Program and the National Academy of Engineering Frontiers of Engineering Education Symposium. Earlier this year he placed second in the new faculty research category with the American Society of Engineering Education. Earlier he earned the 2011 Faculty Research Award from the Office of Research and the 2010 Chip Crane State Pride Faculty Award for excellence in research, teaching and service.
El-adaway earned a doctoral degree in civil engineering from Iowa State University. He also holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the American University in Cairo.
Before joining MSU, Walters worked for a year as a systems engineer on the space station program, five years in the structural strength branch at NASA-Marshall Flight Center and also spent five years as a math and physics instructor at East Mississippi Community College.
Walters is a member of the American Society of Engineering Education, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and has been named Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. While at MSU, he has received the MSU IMAGE/NSBE Certificate of Appreciation and MSU State Pride Faculty Award. He earned a bachelor’s in aerospace engineering and master’s in mathematics from MSU.
The BCoE Academy of Distinguished Teachers was established in 2006 to highlight faculty members who displayed expertise in their field and dedication to students and education. This society has become an elite group of educators in the college.
