The Aerospace Engineering Department has scholarships, assistantships, and fellowships available to qualified applicants. Additionally, the College of Engineering has graduate fellowships available.

The Lieutenant Colonel Charles P. Downer, Jr. Memorial Scholarship

The Department of Aerospace Engineering is pleased to announce the continuation of the Downer Memorial Scholarship. Two awards will be made to juniors for the next academic year, in the amount of $500.00 each. The junior level scholarships will be continued into the senior year provided the scholarship holder's grade point average for the junior year is 3.0 or above.

The pertinent regulations governing these scholarships are as follows:

  1. Scholarships made possible by the fund will be restricted to students in the Department of Aerospace Engineering.

  2. Scholarships will be awarded for the fall and spring semesters of each school year on the basis of satisfactory academic record, participation in technical and professional organizations, definite interest in flying, and/or anticipation of a career in aviation. Participation in Air Force ROTC is a desirable, but not mandatory, criterion.

  3. The scholarships will be available to juniors and seniors only. A student who is a recipient in his junior year will be eligible for consideration the following year. Students are eligible to apply beginning the second semester of their sophomore year.

  4. The scholarships will be administered by a committee appointed by the Head of the Department of Aerospace Engineering to include a member of the Air Force ROTC faculty. This committee will have responsibility for determining the number of awards and selecting recipients.

The Henry W. Shurlds, Jr. Scholarship

The Department of Aerospace Engineering is pleased to announce the continuation of the Henry W. Shurlds, Jr. Scholarship to be awarded to a junior for the next academic year. This scholarship is funded annually and will only exist as long as it is funded.

Guidelines:

  1. The recipient must be majoring in Aerospace Engineering and be a junior during the next academic year.

  2. The amount of the scholarship is $500.00 per year and will be distributed in the amount of $250.00 per semester.

  3. The scholarship recipient will be chosen by the department head and scholarship committee.

  4. The scholarship recipient will be chosen by the following criteria: 50% based on need and 50% based on merit.

For the Downer & Shurlds Scholarships, Applications may be picked up from room 330 Walker, Department of Aerospace Engineering and should be returned to Machaunda Bush by February 15, 2003 for the Fall 2003 awards. Awards for the next academic year will be made by June 1, 2003. Also, any other questions about these scholarships should be directed toward Ms. Bush.

CSEM Fellowships (back to top)

Beginning in the Fall of 2000, Mississippi State University offered up to 40 academic scholarships each year to encourage students to pursue degrees in Computer Science, Engineering or Mathematics (CSEM). Each is a two year $2,500 year award. During academic years 2001-02 and 2002-03, through the generous support of The National Science Foundation, CSEM Fellows will provide financial support to selected CSEM majors who have documented financial need coupled with a strong academic record. Students must reasonably expect to complete a degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or Mathematics within four semesters to be eligible for these awards. Application Requirements:

  • Application Form.
  • An official academic transcript indicating completed credit hours, completed courses and those in which you are currently enrolled, and a cumulative GPA.
  • Two letters of recommendation from academic faculty or administrators.
  • An essay no greater than two pages in length addressing your interest in a chosen field of study.
  • A personal resume addressing college and community activities and employment history.

Graduate Assistantships and Fellowships (back to top)

Graduate Research Assistantships and Graduate Teaching Assistantships are available in the Aerospace Engineering Department. Assistantship stipends range from $900 to $1000 per month plus tuition waiver. All applicants are evaluated for assistantships and fellowships.
