Most engineering structures are designed to undergo relatively small deformations, involving only the elastic portion of the stress-strain diagram. For linearly elastic materials the stress is directly proportional to the strain, and is described by what is known as the Hooke's law. The equation given below represents the Hooke's law for a constant shear loading.
