Cowboys bring home conference honors

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Members from the Mississippi State University Space Cowboys team corralled several honors at the 62nd annual American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Regional Student Conference.

The rocketry team members earned first place in the university outreach category for their presentation about the team’s community outreach efforts and tied for third place in the design competition for their study of impact loads during water landings.

Thirteen universities from the southeast region participated in the competition.

The Space Cowboys are currently completing the design, construction and testing of the team’s entry into this year’s NASA University Student Launch Initiative competition. The rocket must be capable of reaching just under two miles in altitude and a water landing.

Team members who participated in the AIAA conference include (by hometown):

CORINTH— James Kelly, a senior in aerospace engineering.

JACKSON—Blair Schumacher, a senior in aerospace engineering.

MADISON—Mary Kate Smith, a junior in aerospace engineering.

TIPLERSVILLE— Spencer Hall, a senior in aerospace engineering.
